Day by day description
Day 0: Arrival in Moshi or Arusha
Arrive in Tanzania, where you’ll be greeted at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Meet your mountain guide for a detailed briefing and equipment check. Spend the evening relaxing and preparing for your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Altitude: 1,840 m to 2,820 m
Hiking Time: 3 – 4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your Kilimanjaro journey begins at the Lemosho Gate, where registration and introductions with your trekking team take place. The trail leads you through lush rainforest filled with vibrant birdlife and playful blue monkeys. The gentle climb ends at Mti Mkubwa Camp, where dinner is served amid the peaceful sounds of the forest.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Altitude: 2,820 m to 3,505 m
Hiking Time: 5 – 6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
The day’s trek takes you out of the rainforest and into the heather and moorland zone. The trail gradually ascends across ridges and open slopes, revealing sweeping views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon to relax and enjoy a hearty meal under the African sky.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Altitude: 3,505 m to 3,850 m
Hiking Time: 4 – 5 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Heath
Continue across the vast Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful and expansive high-altitude plains. The landscape opens wide with stunning views of Kibo Peak. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp in the early afternoon, giving you time to rest, acclimatize, and enjoy the evening’s tranquility.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut
Altitude: 3,850 m to 4,200 m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The route turns north toward Moir Hut, located in a quiet, less-traveled section of the mountain. The scenery shifts dramatically as you enter the alpine desert zone. Rugged rock formations and distant peaks provide a dramatic backdrop to the day’s hike. Moir Hut, your campsite for the night, sits below the towering Lent Hills.
Day 5: Moir Hut to Barranco Camp
Altitude: 4,200 m to 3,960 m
Hiking Time: 6 – 7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Descend from Moir Hut to connect with the main Machame Route. The trail winds through high alpine terrain before dropping into the lush Barranco Valley. The towering Barranco Wall dominates the skyline, setting the stage for tomorrow’s exciting climb. Relax at Barranco Camp while taking in one of the most striking views on Kilimanjaro.
Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Altitude: 3,960 m to 4,035 m
Hiking Time: 4 – 5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Begin the day with a climb up the Barranco Wall a thrilling, hands-on ascent that rewards you with sweeping vistas. Once over the wall, follow a series of ridges and valleys leading to Karanga Camp. Enjoy the high-altitude scenery, dine under clear skies, and prepare for your next stage of the journey.
Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Altitude: 4,035 m to 4,640 m
Hiking Time: 4 – 6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s trek leads to Barafu Camp, your final stop before the summit. The trail is steep and rocky, offering a real sense of the mountain’s grandeur. On arrival, enjoy an early dinner and rest as you prepare for your summit push. The views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks are simply breathtaking.
Day 8: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, Then Descend to Mweka Hut
Altitude: 4,640 m to 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,100 m
Hiking Time: 11 – 15 hours (ascent and descent)
Habitat: Arctic (summit) / Moorland (descent)
Summit day begins just after midnight under a star-filled sky. The ascent to Stella Point is steep and demanding, but as dawn breaks, the horizon glows with the first light over the glaciers. Reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, and celebrate your accomplishment. Descend to Mweka Hut for dinner and a well-earned rest after this unforgettable day.
Day 9: Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate, Return to Moshi or Arusha
Altitude: 3,100 m to 1,640 m
Hiking Time: 3 – 4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
The final descent takes you through the lush rainforest, alive with tropical vegetation and birdsong. At Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to your climbing team. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, where a warm shower, delicious meal, and celebration await.
