Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Altitude: 2,100 m to 2,785 m
Hiking Time: 3 – 4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
The journey starts with a drive to the Lemosho Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After completing registration, you begin your trek through an untouched, lush rainforest. This gentle introduction to the mountain is alive with the sounds of nature, offering chances to spot colobus monkeys and exotic birds. You’ll arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp for your first night under the towering trees.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Altitude: 2,785 m to 3,504 m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest / Moorland
Leaving the rainforest canopy behind, the trail ascends into the heather and moorland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically, offering stunning, open views back toward the plains below. You’ll trek through a landscape of giant heather and volcanic rock, reaching the edge of the Shira Plateau and your home for the night, Shira 1 Camp.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut
Altitude: 3,504 m to 4,161 m
Hiking Time: 5 – 7 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert
Today, you traverse the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest in the world. The trail leads east toward the Lava Tower (4,600 m), where you will stop for lunch. This “climb high, sleep low” tactic is excellent for acclimatization. After lunch, you descend into the less-traveled northern circuit to the secluded and scenic Moir Hut, nestled at the base of a massive ridge.
Day 4: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
Altitude: 4,161 m to 4,033 m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: High Alpine Zone
A short, steep climb out of the Moir Valley rewards you with panoramic views. The trail then follows a series of rolling hills along the remote northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. Enjoy unparalleled vistas of the Kenyan plains to the north and the sense of peaceful isolation. You’ll arrive at Buffalo Camp in the afternoon, a serene spot in the high alpine desert.
Day 5: Buffalo Camp to Rongai Third Cave
Altitude: 4,033 m to 3,936 m
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: High Alpine Zone
The trek continues eastward, traversing Buffalo Ridge and descending into the Pofu Valley. After lunch at Pofu Camp, you continue through this wild and rugged landscape to Rongai Third Cave. The day involves gradual elevation loss, allowing your body to recover and acclimatize further while enjoying the ever-changing scenery.
Day 6: Rongai Third Cave to School Hut
Altitude: 3,936 m to 4,800 m
Hiking Time: 4 – 5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
A steady ascent brings you across the Saddle, a high-altitude desert plateau that stretches between the majestic peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape here is stark and moon-like. You’ll reach School Hut by early afternoon, where you’ll have an early dinner and rest before your midnight summit attempt.
Day 7: School Hut to Uhuru Peak, then Descend to Millennium Camp
Altitude: 4,800 m to 5,895 m (summit), down to 3,950 m
Hiking Time: 10 – 15 hours
Habitat: Glacial Zone / All Preceding Zones
The ultimate challenge begins around midnight. Climbing by headlamp up steep, scree-covered switchbacks, you will reach Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim. From there, a final trek along the rim leads you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your success at sunrise before beginning the long descent to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.
Day 8: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate, Return to Moshi
Altitude: 3,950 m to 1,640 m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After a final breakfast on the mountain and a joyful farewell ceremony with your crew, you make the final descent through the lush, vibrant rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here, you will receive your official summit certificates. A vehicle will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a hot shower, a celebratory dinner, and reflect on your incredible achievement.
