Day by day description
Day 0: Arrival in Moshi or Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you’ll be met by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Later in the evening, meet your mountain guide for a detailed trek briefing and equipment check. Spend the evening resting and preparing for your upcoming climb.
Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Altitude: 1,950 m to 2,600 m
Hiking Time: 4 – 5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest / Moorland
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at the remote Rongai Gate, near the Kenyan border. After registration, the trek ascends gently through farmland and pine forest before entering the lush rainforest zone. Keep an eye out for colobus monkeys and colorful birds along the trail. By afternoon, you’ll arrive at Simba Camp, situated on the edge of the moorland zone with sweeping views over the plains below.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave
Altitude: 2,600 m to 3,450 m
Hiking Time: 5 – 6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Wake to a beautiful sunrise and begin your steady climb toward the Second Cave. The vegetation becomes sparser as you enter the moorland, with hardy plants like giant lobelias dotting the trail. The day offers wide-open views of Kibo Peak and the Kenyan plains stretching into the horizon. Rest and acclimatize at Second Cave Camp, enjoying dinner under the stars.
Day 3: Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp
Altitude: 3,450 m to 3,600 m
Hiking Time: 4 – 5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today’s route takes you steadily higher across rugged terrain, offering spectacular vistas of the jagged Mawenzi Peak. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp, a serene spot nestled in a sheltered valley. The surrounding cliffs and high-altitude plants create a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and acclimatization.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Hut
Altitude: 3,600 m to 4,330 m
Hiking Time: 4 – 5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The climb continues through steep slopes and sparse vegetation toward Mawenzi Hut, situated below the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak. The air is cooler and thinner, but the views are some of the most striking on Kilimanjaro. Spend the afternoon exploring the area or resting as you prepare for higher altitudes.
Day 5: Mawenzi Hut to Kibo Hut
Altitude: 4,330 m to 4,700 m
Hiking Time: 5 – 6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Cross the barren saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a vast lunar-like landscape stretching for miles. The trek is steady and gradual, allowing for excellent acclimatization. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon for rest and an early dinner. Tonight, you’ll prepare for your summit push — the ultimate challenge of your Kilimanjaro journey.
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, Then Descend to Horombo Hut
Altitude: 4,700 m to 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,720 m
Hiking Time: 11–14 hours (ascent and descent)
Habitat: Arctic (summit) / Moorland (descent)
The summit day begins just after midnight. Following a slow and steady pace, ascend toward Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. As the sun rises, continue to Uhuru Peak the highest point in Africa where breathtaking 360° views reward your effort. After celebrating your success, descend carefully to Kibo and then onward to Horombo Hut for a well-earned meal and rest.
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, Return to Moshi or Arusha
Altitude: 3,720 m to 1,860 m
Hiking Time: 5 – 6 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Rainforest
Your final descent passes through the moorland and back into the lush rainforest. Enjoy the changing scenery and spot wildlife along the way. Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, receive your summit certificate a proud symbol of your accomplishment. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower, delicious meal, and celebration await.
