Day by day description
Day 0: Arrival in Moshi or Arusha
Day 1: Rondorosi Gate to Shira 1
Altitude: 2,100 m to 3,505 m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest / Moorland
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at the Rondorosi Gate, followed by a scenic drive through the lush Molamu area. From here, start your trek toward Shira 1, enjoying the changing scenery as the rainforest gives way to open moorland. This introductory hike offers gentle terrain and sweeping views across the Shira Plateau. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp in time to relax and enjoy a hearty evening meal.
Day 2: Shira 1 to Shira 2
Altitude: 3,505 m to 3,850 m
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Heath
Continue your ascent across the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most striking features. The trail offers broad panoramic views and unique volcanic formations. This moderate trekking day allows for acclimatization while revealing the mountain’s rugged charm. Settle into Shira 2 Camp for dinner and overnight rest beneath the stars.
Day 3: Shira 2 to Barranco Camp
Altitude: 3,850 m to 3,960 m
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s route takes you from Shira 2 through the alpine desert toward Barranco Camp. The landscape becomes more dramatic as vegetation thins, revealing wide vistas and lava formations. Descend slightly into the Barranco Valley, where the towering Barranco Wall comes into view—a highlight of tomorrow’s climb. Enjoy dinner surrounded by awe-inspiring scenery.
Day 4: Barranco to Karanga Camp
Altitude: 3,960 m to 3,995 m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Begin the day with the thrilling ascent of the Barranco Wall, a physically engaging but rewarding climb that offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Traverse the ridges and descend into the beautiful Karanga Valley, where lush vegetation contrasts sharply with the alpine environment. Arrive at Karanga Camp for dinner and relaxation as the sun sets over the mountain.
Day 5: Karanga to Barafu Camp
Altitude: 3,995 m to 4,673 m
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The trail ascends steadily toward Barafu Camp, the final base before your summit attempt. The landscape grows increasingly stark, dominated by volcanic rock and the high mountain winds. Upon arrival, enjoy an early dinner and rest in preparation for your midnight climb to the summit. Barafu’s vantage point offers inspiring views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Day 6: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, Then Descend to Mweka Camp
Altitude: 4,673 m to 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,100 m
Hiking Time: 11–15 hours (ascent and descent)
Habitat: Arctic (summit) / Moorland (descent)
Summit day begins before dawn under a starlit sky. Ascend steadily to Stella Point, where the first light of sunrise illuminates the glaciers a truly unforgettable sight. Continue to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, and celebrate your remarkable achievement. After capturing the moment, begin your descent to Barafu and onward to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved meal and rest.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, Return to Moshi or Arusha
Altitude: 3,100 m to 1,640 m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Descend through the lush rainforest, where vibrant vegetation and birdsong mark the return to lower altitudes. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, receive your climbing certificate and celebrate your success. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for relaxation, a warm meal, and a night of well-earned rest.
