Day by day description
Day 0: Arrival in Moshi or Arusha
Welcome to Tanzania. Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be received by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Later, meet your lead guide for a detailed briefing and gear inspection. Spend the evening at leisure, resting and preparing for the climb ahead.
Day 1: Rondorosi Gate to Molamu, Shira 1, and Shira 2
Altitude: 2,100 m to 3,850 m
Hiking Time: 6 – 8 hours
Habitat: Rainforest / Moorland
Your Kilimanjaro expedition begins at the Rondorosi Gate, where registration formalities are completed before setting off through the Molamu Forest. This section is alive with the sounds and sights of tropical wildlife. As the path ascends, the vegetation gradually transitions into open moorland. Passing through Shira 1, you continue across the expansive Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp. The day concludes with a warm meal and rest beneath the vast night sky.
Day 2: Shira 2 to Barranco
Altitude: 3,850 m to 3,960 m
Hiking Time: 6 – 7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s journey takes you eastward across the Shira Plateau toward Barranco Valley. The trail introduces dramatic high-altitude scenery, with striking views of Kibo Peak and the vast plains below. Unique flora such as giant lobelias and Senecios line the route. As you descend into Barranco Camp, enjoy breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding cliffs before dinner and an evening of rest.
Day 3: Barranco to Karanga
Altitude: 3,960 m to 3,995 m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The day begins with a memorable ascent of the Barranco Wall—one of Kilimanjaro’s most rewarding challenges. From the top, take in sweeping views across the plains. The route continues along a series of ridges and valleys, leading to the lush Karanga Valley. This section promotes acclimatization and offers remarkable photographic opportunities. Enjoy dinner and overnight rest at Karanga Camp.
Day 4: Karanga to Barafu
Altitude: 3,995 m to 4,673 m
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The trail steadily climbs toward Barafu Camp, the final staging point before the summit. The environment becomes increasingly stark and windswept, characterized by volcanic rock and minimal vegetation. Upon reaching Barafu, settle in for an early dinner and prepare for the summit attempt. The anticipation builds as the mountain looms in the distance, illuminated by the evening light.
Day 5: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, Then Descend to Mweka Camp
Altitude: 4,673 m to 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,100 m
Hiking Time: 11–15 hours (ascent and descent)
Habitat: Arctic (summit) / Moorland (descent)
Summit day begins before dawn. Under the light of your headlamp, ascend gradually toward Stella Point, where the first rays of sunrise illuminate the glaciers. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak—Africa’s highest point. Celebrate your achievement, take in the vast views, and capture the moment before beginning your descent to Barafu and onward to Mweka Camp. Enjoy a well-earned dinner and rest after a long, rewarding day.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, Return to Moshi or Arusha
Altitude: 3,100 m to 1,640 m
Hiking Time: 3 – 4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Descend through the verdant rainforest, where birdcalls and tropical vegetation mark your return to lower altitudes. On arrival at Mweka Gate, receive your Kilimanjaro climbing certificate a lasting memento of your success. You will then be transferred back to Moshi or Arusha for relaxation, a celebratory meal, and a well-deserved rest.
