Trip Overview

Just a few hours’ drive from Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible safari destinations, making it perfect for a short but rewarding adventure. Known as the “Serengeti of the South,” Mikumi’s vast floodplains are home to lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, crocodiles, and more than 300 bird species. Its landscapes mirror those of its larger neighbor, Selous Game Reserve, and provide some of the best opportunities for wildlife sightings in Southern Tanzania.

This 3-day Mikumi safari combines classic game drives with a unique cultural experience visiting a Maasai village. You’ll not only encounter Tanzania’s incredible wildlife but also engage with the traditions, dances, and daily life of one of Africa’s most iconic tribes.

Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park – Afternoon Game Drive

Your adventure begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your hotel or the airport in Dar es Salaam. As you leave the bustling city behind, the scenery transforms into open countryside and rural villages.

Arriving at Mikumi National Park, you’ll check in and immediately set off on your first game drive. The park’s open plains and waterholes attract a wide variety of animals. Keep your camera ready for sightings of lions, giraffes, elephants, wildebeests, zebras, impalas, warthogs, and buffalo. Enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the scenic picnic centers inside the park before continuing your exploration.

As evening approaches, head back to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay at TANAPA Cottages, surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Day 2: Full-Day Safari & Maasai Village Visit

After breakfast, set off for a full-day game drive across Mikumi. The park’s diverse habitats from acacia woodlands to open plains provide a sanctuary for leopards, crocodiles, hippos, jackals, and elands, alongside the more familiar Big 5 species. A packed picnic lunch will keep you energized as you explore deeper into the park.

In the afternoon, trade the wildlife experience for a cultural immersion. Visit a traditional Maasai village, where you’ll be welcomed with vibrant dances, storytelling, and a chance to learn about their pastoral way of life. This cultural encounter offers meaningful insight into one of Tanzania’s most famous tribes, balancing the wild beauty of the park with the richness of human heritage.

Return to Camp Bastian in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
