Day by day description

Day 0: Arrival in Moshi or Arusha

Welcome to Tanzania Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be greeted by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Later in the evening, meet your mountain guide for a detailed trek briefing and equipment check. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and preparing for your climb.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave

Altitude: 1,600 m to 2,850 m
Hiking Time: 5 – 6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

The trek begins at Umbwe Gate, located on the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail ascends steeply through dense rainforest, where moss-covered trees and the sounds of tropical birds create an enchanting atmosphere. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp, surrounded by lush forest, where dinner and rest await.

Day 2: Umbwe Cave to Barranco Camp

Altitude: 2,850 m to 3,960 m
Hiking Time: 5 – 6 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert

Today’s hike leads out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper and rockier as you ascend, revealing breathtaking views of the southern glaciers. The path eventually joins the Machame Route before reaching Barranco Camp, where you’ll rest beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Barranco Camp

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Spend the day acclimatizing at Barranco Camp. This rest day allows your body to adjust to the high altitude, increasing your chances of summit success. Relax, enjoy the views of the towering glaciers, and take short acclimatization walks around camp.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Altitude: 3,960 m to 4,035 m
Hiking Time: 4 – 5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Begin the morning with the exhilarating climb up the Barranco Wall, one of Kilimanjaro’s most thrilling sections. Once at the top, enjoy sweeping vistas across the plains below. Continue along a series of ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp, a scenic spot perfect for relaxation and acclimatization.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Altitude: 4,035 m to 4,640 m
Hiking Time: 4 – 5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

The trail continues upward through an increasingly barren landscape of volcanic rock and dust. By midday, you’ll reach Barafu Camp, the high camp for your summit attempt. The camp offers magnificent views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding terrain. Enjoy an early dinner and rest before the overnight climb to the summit.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, Then Descend to Mweka Camp

Altitude: 4,640 m to 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,100 m
Hiking Time: 11 – 13 hours (ascent and descent)
Habitat: Arctic (summit) / Rainforest (descent)

Summit day begins just after midnight. Equipped with headlamps and determination, you’ll ascend steadily toward Stella Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa. As dawn breaks, the first rays of sunlight illuminate the glaciers and the vast plains below. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi

Altitude: 3,090 m to 1,640 m
Hiking Time: 3 – 4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, continue descending through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your official Kilimanjaro Climbing Certificate. Our driver will meet you for the return transfer to your hotel in Moshi, where you can relax and celebrate your success.
