Day by day description

Day 0: Arrival in Tanzania

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Here, your head guide will provide a detailed briefing, perform a gear check, and help arrange any necessary rentals. Enjoy a relaxing evening, dinner, and rest before your adventure begins.

Day 1: Rongai Gate to First Cave

Altitude: 1,950 m to 2,600 m
Hiking Time: 3 – 4 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest

The trek begins at the Rongai Gate on Kilimanjaro’s northern side. After registration, you start hiking through a gentle montane forest. The gradual ascent leads to First Cave campsite, offering a tranquil and steady introduction to the trek.

Day 2: First Cave to Second Cave

Altitude: 2,600 m to 3,450 m
Hiking Time: 3 – 4 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Leaving the forest behind, the trail ascends into the moorland zone, where giant heathers line the path. Expansive views open up toward the Kenyan plains. As you climb higher, you’ll arrive at Second Cave campsite for dinner and overnight rest.

Day 3: Second Cave to Third Cave

Altitude: 3,450 m to 3,870 m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today’s trek continues into the high alpine desert. The landscape becomes more rugged and barren, offering a true sense of wilderness. The shorter hiking day is strategic for acclimatization before moving to higher elevations.

Day 4: Third Cave to Kibo Hut

Altitude: 3,870 m to 4,720 m
Hiking Time: 4 – 5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

The trail now crosses the stark “Saddle,” a high-altitude desert plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. You’ll arrive at Kibo Hut by early afternoon. This is your summit base camp, where you will have an early dinner and rest before the midnight summit push.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then Descend to Horombo Hut

Altitude: 4,720 m to 5,895 m (summit), down to 3,720 m
Hiking Time: 10 – 14 hours
Habitat: Glacial Zone / Alpine Desert

The most challenging day begins around midnight. Ascend steadily by headlamp up steep scree slopes to Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) before following the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the highest point in Africa. Witness a glorious sunrise before descending to Horombo Hut for a hot meal and well-deserved rest.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, Return to Moshi

Altitude: 3,720 m to 1,860 m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Rainforest

After breakfast and a farewell ceremony with your mountain crew, descend through the lush rainforest to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates before returning to Moshi. Enjoy a refreshing shower, delicious dinner, and celebration at your hotel.
